Keeping Kids Busy During Summer Break in Desert Ridge

June 8, 2016 by Deanna Bimer

Desert Ridge Marketplace photoSummer is here!  And so is the heat!  Here are some fun things to do with kids in Desert Ridge, to beat the heat . . .

  1. Splash Pad at Desert Ridge Marketplace.  This tot-friendly splash pad is bumping from morning to evening thanks to its prime location near the food court at Desert Ridge Marketplace.  A few simple rules are enforced by mall security such as swimsuits (and swim diapers) must be worn, food and drink must be kept 10 feet away from the splash pad, and no running is allowed.  There are plenty of umbrella-shaded tables and chairs for the adults to enjoy.
  2. Painting Pottery at As You Wish, in Desert Ridge Marketplace.  Besides drop in painting, this popular spot also hosts several summer classes available on their website, for ages 5 and up.

Creating keepsakes in air-conditioned comfort is a fun way to while away a summer afternoon.

  1. Storytime at Barnes & Noble, in Desert Ridge Marketplace.  Every kid, big and small, loves stories.  And where better to hear them read out loud, than in one of the largest bookstores in the Valley of the Sun?  This location hosts monthly stories with Ty, the therapy dog, on Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m.  A few Saturdays each month there are themed stories, followed by activities and coloring.
  2. Kids love The Play Factory, in Desert Ridge Marketplace.  Thanks to its rock wall, large inflatable slide, gigantic play climbing structure, a toddler fun zone, and (free) video game area, there’s something fun for every age.  With open play every day, and family fun nights on the weekend, this is a great place for kids to spend hot summer days.  Free Wi-Fi for the parents make it a good place to catch up on emails.
  3. Dave & Buster’s, with its bowling alley and video games, is another fun summer activity for kiddos at Desert Ridge Marketplace.  Downstairs is the kid-friendly bowling alley, while upstairs is a gigantic arcade with all types of video games.  Kids (and their parents) are guaranteed to have a blast with the variety of games available.  A tip:  great coupon deals can be found online for Dave & Buster’s.

Environmentally Friendly Features

June 4, 2016 by Deanna Bimer

El ChorroEnvironmentally friendly features are updates that will only increase the value of your home, whether you are listing your home for sale, or seeking to update your current home.  One of the quickest ways to go green is to install a digital thermostat.  These new thermostats are programmable, have no moving parts (thus need no repair), and they increase the efficiency of the energy used to heat and cool your home, which is better for the environment, and your wallet.  These thermostats are also popular updates we can include on the MLS listing to alert potential buyers.

Replacing your older appliances with energy-efficient versions is another fantastic way to go green.  Appliances with the Energy Star certification are 10-50% more efficient, on average, than traditional appliances.  Energy Star refrigerators, for example, use 40% less energy than refrigerators produced in 2001.  Motion sensor light switches in all bathrooms and closets are another simple way to update your home while increasing both the value of the home as well as the efficient use of energy.

Living in the Sonoran Desert makes water a critical resource worthy of conserving.  Low-flow showerheads, faucets and toilets are all easy ways to reduce the amount of water used in everyday life.  Drinking water is another area where a small investment can pay big dividends for the environment.   Water filtration systems such as reverse-osmosis will eliminate reliance on wasteful plastic bottles and containers, and will reduce one’s carbon footprint.  These systems are another upgrade that will pay dividends in the listing price when you are ready to sell your home.

Finally, whether you are painting your home to prep it for sale, or freshening up the paint in your current residence, low or no VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint is an easy way to reduce the toxicity of your environment.  The EPA has determined that inside air is 3-5 times more toxic than outdoor air, thanks to the toxic compounds in paint and finishes in your home.  Low or no VOC paint is also beneficial for health reasons, and people with allergies or sensitivities to chemicals will also appreciate these paints.

We’d be happy to discuss more ways to update your home with an eye towards going greener!
